As REALTORS® we seek it for our clients every day.

Through the MREA Shelter Foundation we can give to those who need shelter the most.

Our Close a Sale – Open a Door campaign is our mission to raise a minumum of $10 for every house we sell in Manitoba. When we close a sale, we donate to make shelter possible for someone else. 

Recurring monthly donations can be arranged through the CanadaHelps form on the right, or by contacting your broker to cumulatively donate directly to the foundation at the end of the year.

Q: Congratulations on being the first REALTOR® to give to the Close a Sale - Open A Door campaign for your MREA Shelter Foundation!

I didn’t even think about being first, I just like the campaign.

Q: Why?

I just think it’s the right thing to do and I also like that they made it so easy for everyone to participate. At $10 per transaction that is something virtually everyone can afford so it’s just great.

It’s a campaign that makes so much sense - easy to understand and contribute to. I just love it! 

Q: How did you calculate your contribution?

If you had said that the minimum donation was for example $500, then you likely wouldn’t have as many takers. But at $10 the door is open for everyone.

Q: So, it’s possible for everyone in the industry to participate?

Yes. I also like the idea that we’re encouraged to start early. So, if you want to contribute $10 for every sale in 2013, then you will already have a good head start. I rounded up my donation to $500 because I likely did close to 50 transactions last year.

Q: That’s very generous. What prompted you to give so much?

As REALTORS®, we all sell shelter and that’s how we all make a living. But now, we can also work together to provide shelter. To help people have a roof over their heads or to have a meal, and for us to be collectively involved, I really believe in that idea.

Q: You also give at work through another initiative.

It’s so great to give. At work, we all contribute to another outreach – The Children’s Miracle Network - and we do that on a national scale. But here, we can also afford as an industry to put all our efforts together. I like that this campaign is very local and that’s why I wanted to jump on board immediately. 

So, we can give through the office, and then, as a Manitoba association, we can be a part of something good together.  I am very proud of what we do through our company, but I am most proud of what REALTORS® do together.

"In this industry, we love to give as we receive and I am blessed to have received much.

Royal LePage also has another shelter foundation, and it benefits women's shelters and children in Canada, and that's a good thing. But like everything else, funding for shelter-related causes is often very difficult to come by, but the demand and need is so great. The MREA Shelter Foundation represents all of us working together in real estate in Manitoba and giving back together, to people who need us supporting our own communities every way we can.

I have a real soft spot for people in transition and for those in need of shelter, especially for women and children. The dollars I gave to this campaign will stay in Brandon, and will be received by people in need of shelter in Brandon.  That's one of the best things for me - it's local.  This campaign makes a difference right at home in Brandon.

It's our responsibility and shared privilege as real estate professionals to give back.  I really believe that in this life, it's all about giving.  And we can all give according to what we have been given. I really think it's all about giving."

How does it feel to give back?
 
Hard times can fall on anyone, any time. Any of us could find ourselves facing difficult struggles with life and needing some extra support and care. The people we are helping have the same human needs we all have, and safe shelter is at the foundation. I’m so glad we have this opportunity to give back and make a difference. 
 
Why are you participating in Close a Sale, Open a Door?
 
As REALTORS®, it’s our everyday business to find and sell shelter to people in the real estate market. But there are people less fortunate who need extra help to find shelter. What better way to give back than with a charitable foundation that’s directly related to meeting one of the most basic needs everyone has -- a safe place to live?
 
When you think of Close a Sale, Open a Door, what do those words mean to you?
 
In our business we are involved in helping vendors and purchasers with their purchase or sale of their home. With the sale or purchase the new program allows us an opportunity to open a door to a foundation that is based on shelter-related causes. People can walk through doors that they might not have hoped or imagined could ever be open to them. We’ve provided grants for places like Ronald McDonald House and the North End Women’s Shelter. Those are open doors that matter to me. 
 
What do you think about having an outreach effort that unites the profession in shared purpose?
 
The Close a Sale, Open a Door campaign is a great opportunity for REALTORS® to pool our monies into something relevant to our business and needed in our community. Sometimes we forget that REALTORS® give do back to the community in many different ways. Sometimes it’s with gifts of time, like coaching a kids’ soccer team or volunteering at a school. And sometimes it’s with gifts of money. We give back in so many ways, and this is another great opportunity.
